Ms. Lucy Willard graduated from Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans and later obtained a baccalaureate degree in nursing and a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Arizona. During her nursing career she worked as an airline stewardess, staff nurse, private duty nurse and as an instructor in nursing and staff development.

She gives cheerfully of her time and talents to nursing, nursing education and professional and community groups. She is active in her church, the Georgia League for Nursing, National League for Nursing, Georgia Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing, American Association of University Women and the Atlanta’s Woman’s Club.

She served the Georgia League for Nursing (GLN) as an office volunteer and coordinated the work of the Georgia League for Nursing office for several years. She also served on the program development committee and on other committees. She received both the Mabel Korsell and Jane Van de Vrede distinguished Georgia League for Nursing awards for her contributions to the Georgia League for Nursing and the citizens of Georgia.

Ms. Willard was influential in the establishment of three nursing scholarships provided by GLN. Two of these were one time scholarships honoring Karen Bacheller and the late Barbara Harvey who both served as Georgia League for Nursing presidents. The third scholarship, which is continuing, was the Sarah Helen Killgore Scholarship.

Ms. Willard has a strong commitment to education and nursing education. Through the Lucy Willard Scholarship she and her husband, Samuel, have made generous monetary contributions that have enabled many nursing students to complete their basic nursing education. This scholarship was established by the Georgia League for Nursing Board in 1990 and was awarded for the first time in 1991.
